Melbourne-based builder Kapitol has claimed the top position in\u00a0Hubexo\u2019s\u00a02026\u00a0Construction League<\/a>\u00a0rankings, recording more than $3.5 billion in project commencements during 2025 and\u00a0emerging\u00a0as one of the country\u2019s fastest-growing contractors.\u00a0

The fifth edition of the Construction League ranks Australia\u2019s top 50 builders by the value of projects that\u00a0commenced\u00a0construction during 2025\u00a0across the commercial, community, industrial,\u00a0legal\u00a0and military, and multi-residential sectors.\u00a0

The rankings, compiled from project intelligence tracked through\u00a0Hubexo\u2019s\u00a0LeadManager<\/a>\u00a0platform, suggest Australia\u2019s construction market is increasingly concentrating around larger, more sophisticated developments. Few builders illustrate that shift more clearly than\u00a0Kapitol, whose pipeline is heavily weighted toward hyperscale data\u00a0centres, Build-to-Rent\u00a0projects\u00a0and advanced industrial facilities.

Yet inside\u00a0Kapitol, the Construction League milestone is being viewed less as an endpoint and more as evidence that a long-term operating model is beginning to scale.\u00a0

Founded in 2018 by former Multiplex executives Andrew Deveson and David Caputo,\u00a0Kapitol\u00a0has rapidly expanded from a startup contractor into a major player across data\u00a0centres, Build-to-Rent,\u00a0defence, education and institutional construction.\u00a0

Kaptiol\u2019s\u00a02025 project commencements reflect both the scale and complexity of that evolution. Major commencements included\u00a0NEXTDC M3 Stage 2\/4 hyperscale data\u00a0centre\u00a0project at West\u00a0Footscray, NEXTDC M2 Stage 9 development in Tullamarine,\u00a0as well as\u00a0District Living\u2019s\u00a0Build-to-Rent project in Docklands and the Hanwha\u00a0Defence\u00a0production facility at Avalon.\u00a0

Collectively, the projects highlight the builder\u2019s increasing concentration on technically demanding sectors where delivery capability, systems integration and operational precision are becoming critical differentiators.\u00a0

Kapitol\u2019s rise also mirrors broader structural changes occurring across the Australian construction market.

The report found the nation\u2019s top 50 builders\u00a0commenced\u00a0projects worth a combined $43.9 billion<\/a> during 2025, a 32%\u00a0increase year-on-year despite\u00a0relatively stable\u00a0project volumes. The figures suggest the industry is increasingly shifting toward larger, more\u00a0sophisticated\u00a0and capital-intensive developments.

For\u00a0Kapitol, that shift has been underpinned by a deliberate investment in technology, process\u00a0engineering\u00a0and internal capability.

\u201cWe always knew that if we wanted to do exceptional work, we had to build a business capable of investing heavily in systems, technology and people\u201d,\u00a0Deveson told\u00a0Hubexo.<\/em>

Unlike many\u00a0tier-one builders that evolved through traditional delivery models,\u00a0Kapitol\u2019s\u00a0leadership has consistently framed the business more like a technology platform than a conventional construction company.\u00a0

\u201cWe looked more to tech companies than construction companies when shaping the\u00a0Kapitol\u00a0brand, because we knew copying the traditional model would only ever make us an inferior version of someone else. Innovation for us has always been about finding a fundamentally\u00a0different way\u00a0to solve problems\u201d,\u00a0Deveson said.\u00a0

That philosophy has become increasingly important as the company deepens its exposure to hyperscale data\u00a0centre\u00a0work\u2014one of the country\u2019s fastest-growing and most technically demanding asset classes.\u00a0

Data\u00a0centre\u00a0projects require extreme coordination across services integration, commissioning,\u00a0program\u00a0management\u00a0and operational reliability. The margin for delivery failure is narrow, particularly when dealing with global hyperscale operators and mission-critical infrastructure.\u00a0

Kapitol’s operational philosophy has been influenced heavily by aviation and medicine, industries where complex systems are designed to reduce errors and improve reliability.\u00a0The company is now extending that approach through the integration of artificial intelligence.

AI is now accelerating that journey, but\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0also exposing just how much deeper we still need to go with our systems and data\u201d,\u00a0Deveson said.\u00a0

Despite Kapitol\u2019s rapid ascent,\u00a0Deveson\u00a0maintains\u00a0the business\u00a0remains\u00a0deeply conscious of the complexity and risk inherent within construction delivery.\u00a0

But for Kapitol\u2019s founders, the broader ambition\u00a0remains\u00a0centred\u00a0less on size than on repeatability.\u00a0

For a business that only secured its first contract eight years ago, topping Australia\u2019s builder rankings\u00a0represents\u00a0a remarkable rise.\u00a0
