In response, the industry is becoming more focused and resilient. Leading firms are sharpening operational discipline, prioritising project opportunities, and adopting more controlled, data informed delivery approaches within a challenging market.
The fourth edition of the Construction League reveals the velocity of New Zealand’s leading builders, ranking the top 50 firms by the total value of projects that commenced construction during 2025. Spanning the commercial, community, industrial, legal and military, and multi-residential sectors, our report provides a breakdown of activity, from total number of project commencements to average and total project values.
For the top 10 firms, we showcase a high-level overview of project activity by sector and geographic distribution, offering greater insight into their position in a challenging market.
This year’s top 50 builders commenced construction on 842 projects, comparable to last year’s numbers with only a 5% year-on-year drop. The total values of those starts saw a slight lift to $8.7 billion. The top 10 recorded 238 project commencements, totalling almost $4.7 billion in combined value. With only a marginal decrease in totals year-on-year, the top 10 firms continue to focus on pipeline quality in the face of significant economic headwinds.
New Zealand’s top-ranked builder secured the number one position with just over $1 billion in project commencements. This industry titan initiated 103 projects throughout 2025, a definitive volume that sets a new Construction League record.
While the Construction League ranks firms by the total value of construction commencements, the data prompts a deeper examination of the forces driving that success: the strength of client partnerships, the calibre of people and culture, and the technical capability required to execute at scale.
